A challenging site with a steep back garden set behind a large patio area surrounded by a high retaining wall. This eyesore of a structure divided the back garden into two spaces cut off by the dramatic level change. The concept for the design was to create an outdoor patio space that was better connected to the rest of the garden by tackling the issue of the wall head on. This was achieved by deconstructing the wall into smaller sections and integrating it into the existing patio through a set of steps with very large tread areas. A change in material from rendered block to gabions along with black limestone and granite sett paving made the patio more interesting. Small areas of planting broke up the hard landscaping helping to soften the space and blend it into the surrounding landscape. The hot tub area was split over two levels of decking which along with the steps created a multi-level patio full of interest, good circulation and better connected to the rest of the garden.
